Carol Howard &
Hooley's

Carol Howard and Hooley’s

No one grew up in Stillwater without regular visits to Hooley’s. Carol Howard was considered the “Face of Hooley’s”. Everyone who entered the store was greeted as a friend, and even by name, by Carol. Hooley’s grocery history goes back to the 1870’s and originally became what we now know as Cub Foods. Carol was a fundamental part of organizing the employees of the grocery industry as part of that evolution. Those who grew up in Stillwater remember Carol slipping them a dime to ride the pony out front. Hooley’s hosted an annual watermelon contest, and some remember heckling the watermelon drivers to drop a watermelon on the sidewalk so they could grab a chunk of sweet melon in the summer heat, and inevitably that would happen with a nod and a wink. Carol’s graciousness and lessons on customer service shaped an entire group of people who worked and shopped there.
